Raw gas produced in a biogas plant contains 50-65% methane (CH4) and is refined to 97% methane to meet the requirements to either be used as vehicle fuel or if the gas should be added in a gas pipeline.
In Sweden exists a standard (SS 155438) that specifies the requirements that must be met for vehicle gas such as the interval whithin which the methane content may vary, allowed maximum amount of water and oxygen among other things.

Which type of upgrading technique that is the most effective for a biogas plant depends on factors like energy consumption, location, gas quality, cost etc. These factors are analyzed in detail during the planning phase for the plant.
The most common technique is water scrubbing in which the upgrading to vehicle gas is done by leading the raw gas through water. The carbon dioxide, an undesireable gas in vehicle gas, dissolves in the water and the gas that is left has a high enough methane grade to be used as fuel for cars or buses. To be able to use the water again in a recirculating cycle the water must be purified from the carbon dioxide before it is returned into the process again.
